The final part of this wonderful trilogy opens with the beheading of Anne Boleyn. Ah, Cromwell. Welcome back, my old friend.
This is not like a any book I have read before.
A boy is the sole survivor of a plane crash. Why him? Is he 'the chosen one' like Harry Potter?
A unusual and clever psychological study where the protagonist is also the antagonist. But does he realise this?
The Historian is an elegant masterpiece, mixing folklore with history, gothic terror and classic literature.
Imagine you could go back in time but had to return before your coffee gets cold. Fascinating concept.
A disturbing story about unknown victims of war.
I remember a gate in Robin Hood's Bay, Yorkshire, that opened to nowhere but a sheer drop down a cliff and a path that led the same way. These are the childhood memories I have about the location where this book is set.
Time, history, perception and the recreation of the Beatles' Abbey Road photograph,
A story of maturing relationships - in purple prose.
I was expecting, I suppose, something along the lines of A Kind of Loving by Stan Barstow, where a young couple face the adult world of intimacy together. Instead there was the wedding night, a mundane life story for both of them (which was as interesting as anyone ordinary's life story but important for comparison), then the rest of the wedding night and its consequences. This is concluded by a shoot forward of forty years.
Three things dominate my thoughts on this book.
This book is unusual - particularly chapter 100, which simply states that the author always wanted a chapter 100 and is completely irrelevant to the story. However, I think it deserved the Booker award for originality.
