I've known someone for about forty years who loves his 'dad jokes', so I immediately thought of him when I saw this book. And the claim that these are the 'greatest of all time' certainly needs to be challenged.
'Dad jokes' are traditionally the type of unsophisticated humour expressed by older men, notably fathers who probably think they are entertaining their children. Obviously anyone can indulge in these jokes that give rise to groans rather than laughs, and this book is no exception. Although 'dad jokes' are universal, the deadpan delivery and the source of this humour being mostly wordplay and puns, are typically English, as well as the simple one-liners, an example on the front cover demonstrates this: 'Why did the hairdresser win the race? He knew a shortcut.' The hard backed book is a bit smaller than a typical novel and has a bright, positive cover. The jokes are well spaced out with about two per page. It is written by a social media community rather than one person, although the initial idea came from one person's dad of course. The challenge is whether these jokes are actually the greatest of all time. My family read them and none of the adults had heard any of the jokes before, although my daughter said that she knew two. Not bad then, so fair to say the book has met the challenge. And the 'dad' in the family likes to repeat them at appropriate times. Groans all round. Recommended for anyone who likes this type of humour and likes telling jokes. Leave on the coffee table for instant access to improving your day. Pretty much inoffensive, so family-friendly. Great fun. *Like all books, it has prose and cons.
