14/8/2025 The Lucky Winners by K.L. Slater
A current popular dream in Britain right now is to win a luxury house in a beautiful part of the country. In this book, that's exactly what happens. Only, it's not the answer to their problems but a catalyst in causing even more.
A young married couple struggle with daily life, the cost of living, poorly paid jobs and a house that really needs some care. Then to find out that they have won a house in the picturesque Lake District in Cumbria - on the edge of Lake Windemere no less - seems quite perfect. So they leave their old life in Nottingham behind and move to their fresh future. However, not everyone is pleased for them. Friends are envious (understandably) and the new neighbours and locals are resentful. Spiteful damage occurs to the house and car and they're pretty sure that someone is watching them. The fear is that an old secret may come to the fore... This is a pacy tale that starts with the drudgery of a life of poverty and increases tension as the stakes are raised. The short chapters keep pulling the thriller along coupled with the uncomfortable past until everything is revealed at the end. The characters have their quirks so sometimes they appear as the goodies, then that quickly changes. The husband in the book seems like such a nice man...but no one is free of suspicion of course. Slater's writing here is atmospheric and perfect for a thriller such as this. Could be her best book yet.
