Sometimes we all need to get away for a bit. We need a place that is safe and out of reach, far from busybodies and those who bring us down. A refuge. All fugitives need a refuge. Actually - especially fugitives.
The influence of Iona remained strong for a long time. Many Irish monks moved there and Northumbrian kings such as Oswald and Oswiu could speak Irish and were knowledgeable of Irish Church history. The Iona monastery established other monasteries throughout England on land given to them b the Northumbrian kings. The link between Iona and English nobility stayed for several hundred years.
Nowadays Iona is a quiet island with a small population but is open to tourists. It is what it always has been - a refuge, a place to get away from it all, to gain peace and restoration.
