Some places seem to have it all. In the comparatively short time it existed, three hundred years, the Dark Age kingdom of Northumbria certainly left its mark on British history.
Bernard Cornwell set his fictional series The Saxon Stories in Northumbria. It was made into a very successful television series on BBC and renamed The Last Kingdom. The whole series of books gives a great insight to the Dark Ages life, particularly Northumbria and, later, Wessex as well. Extremely well researched with intricate detail, you won't find another piece of fiction that demonstrates the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms quite like this. Superb.
