Every year the conversation goes like this:
Child - "Santa isn't real, he's my dad!"
Me - "Wow! Your dad is Santa? How cool is that?"
Father Christmas/Santa Claus is all of them. An amalgamation of the ancient and modern, Christian, pagan and secular, a man who represents generosity and hope. I am reminded of Dodie Smith's book, The Starlight Barking, where the doggie god Sirius appears to each dog as their own breed. For example, Sirius is a Dalmatian to the Dalmations, a Labrador to the Labradors and a Heinz 57 Variety to the Heinz 57 Variety mongrel dog. Such is Father Christmas. No matter what name you give him, he represents the light in the darkness.
Merry Christmas everyone!
