Simple escapism? Deep and complex?
In some of my reviews I say that a book would make a great holiday read. In this instance I mean something suitable for reading at the beach or poolside. To me, it is quite clear what the perfect summer book is. Light.
But when discussing this with friends recently, it seems that we all have different ideas what the perfect type of book is. Who would have thought?
One friend said that holidays are all about escape. We travel to places that are far removed from our everyday lives and the reading material should be the same. Exotic locations, maybe even different galaxies, perhaps somewhere from the past. Different people: not office workers or plumbers but kings, astronauts, gods or magicians. You could try Crushed here, read about the Medieval trial by ordeal!
Someone else remarked that holidays are all about the new so the fortnight is where they try out new food, sights, clothes and books. What better time to discover new authors or genres? If you read an embarrassing trashy novel (no, I'm not commenting) there will be nobody you know to witness it. No ridicule. Plus you can leave the book at the side of the pool when you've finished with it. No one will ever know your dirty little secret. A different kind of holiday fling.
With approximately two weeks with nothing much to do, what about reading something deep and philosophical? There is certainly the time to ponder the great existential questions where we can think for hours without interruption. Bar sipping the occasional Pina Colada of course.
For me, I want nothing taxing. A simple story to read that I can follow even if I drop off under the haze of too much sun and Mojitos, just pick up where I left off kinda tale. Brain strain reading is for the working week.
And then there are folk who simply enjoy the the summer to just read, read, read and nothing else. They don't care what kind of novel they have. These people relish the opportunity to pack in loads of reading without a summer holiday agenda. See my top ten books set in the summer.
Which one are you?
