What I'm Reading: Books of England

Amanda's Butterfly by Nick Butterworth

Picture
I have a daughter named Amanda, so of course, I had to buy this book.

Aimed at young children, this is a story about a little girl who decides to chase butterflies with her net. When it starts to rain she takes shelter in the garden shed and finds something that needs her help. At first, she thinks it's a butterfly, but it isn't.

The charming tale is written simply with a sentence on each colourful page so that parents can read the story and children can follow the stunning pictures illustrated by the very talented author. For older children they can read it themselves. The first edition of the book had no words, which is useful for children to use their imagination, but Butterworth has a lovely writing style and the inside cover has a little poem:

For Amanda

When father Christmas seems too fat
For the chimney,
And you have no more teeth for the tooth fairy;
There is some magic in the world
That you can believe in.

The story is about adventure, caring, problem solving and helping others - perfect for little children.

Nick Butterworth is famous for his Percy the Park Keeper series, but this story is just as delightful and holds a special place in my heart. Recommended.

Published by Collins on 14 March 1991. Paperback edition published by Picture Lions (a division of HarperCollins) on 16 July 1992.
