Magical Britain: 650 Enchanted and Mystical Sites by Rob Wildwood

Picture
What a wonderful book this is.

This is my kind of travel book. Full of history, folklore, landscape features both natural and man-made that demonstrate how everything is connected in spirit as well as location. As it states in the title, there are six hundred and fifty 'enchanted and mythical sites' between the covers that are detailed with description, location, significance and beautiful coloured photographs.

The book is well structured in a practical way by means of both themes and geographical regions that cover the special areas of Britain. So, if it is pagan sites, healing wells, dragons or mythical stones you are looking for, there is a chapter for it. Or the book is a very handy travel guide based on the regions, so if you find yourself in central Cornwall, for example, the significant places are all there under that heading, with many obscure and none particularly tourist sites. Very useful if it can be fitted into the glove compartment in the car if you are a rather free spirit when travelling and sightseeing.

Like a good travel guide, each area comes with symbols that represent whether the place is interesting with regard to particular mythological or historical aspects and includes relevant GPS co-ordinates.  The text is clear and unfussy and explains the beliefs of the ancient peoples in a knowledgeable manner and therefore makes a fascinating read.

I received this book as a gift, which it truly is.
