What I'm Reading: Books of England

Writers' & Artists' Yearbook by Bloomsbury Yearbooks

Picture
There is a very good reason why this book, which is reproduced every year, is always a bestseller. First published in 1906, it originally had a list of book, newspaper and magazine publishers available in Britain. Since then the list has grown longer and includes overseas publishers, audio publishers, online publishing, illustrators, theatre and information for self-publishers, agents and festivals.

But this resource has evolved into so much more than a book of lists. Now it has articles from successful authors and publishers about the whole process from writing to submission. It is a very competitive and diverse market, and the Yearbook offers advice and guidance for all forms of writing, such as sport, romantic comedy, health and fitness and so on.  At more than 800 pages, writers certainly get their money's worth.

One of the best features of this publication is that the contributors are at the top of their game. Too often books and guides about writing and finding publishers  - who will get your dream 'out there' -  are written by people nobody has ever heard of. This is the professionals' guide where best selling authors offer their advice and tell their story, as do the publishing experts.

However, although the publishers and agents are available to everyone, the list is very London-centric, reflecting the publication industry's concentration in the capital.  The vast majority of the literary agencies, traditional publishers, and media organizations listed in the directory are based in London.

This book is practical, informative and positively inspirational. This is the only resource writers need to make their work real and should be the very first place they turn to.
