Old Christmas by Washington Irving

A charming story by the American author Washington Irving and his image of traditional English Christmas. It is said that these traditions, as told in this book,  sparked the interest in the American Christmas festivities. Either way, this is a great book to read.

There are five chapters to the tale, the first being a description of traditions as set by the 1600s from poems and text. These are closely linked to nature in the winter and are beautifully expressed and the symbolism explained. From there, the narrator travels by stagecoach to the local squire's manor house and country estate, observing his travelling companions who are children from a nearby village. The activities on Christmas eve and Christmas day are described, events such as games, drinking and going to church, and finally concluding with the Christmas dinner - the pinnacle of every Christmas, surely.

The intricate detail of the festive feast is remarkable, as well as the drinking of the wassail punch with the roasted apples bobbing on the top. This sounds so good, it is something I will try too! 

This short book portrays the perfect Christmas English traditions in the style of Victoriana celebrations, with snow, sentimentality and a little bit of magic. Written in the typically elevated language of the 1800s. Many publications are illustrated and the images certainly add to the story. Lovely book, worth a read during the hectic modern Christmas where for a minute we can imagine being in the stately home being served wassail by staff. Enjoy the Christmas dream now and again.
