16/9/1989 One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth
This lovely book should be on every child's bookshelf. The charming cover is enough to draw us all in.
One Snowy Night is arguably the best of the Percy the Park Keeper series of stories aimed at very young children, about the day to day life of an English park keeper. In this tale he prepares for a very cold night, gets extra blankets, makes cocoa. But the animals in the park are cold too, and their beds are full of snow. It is one of the most English things I can think of. The book is about friendship, acceptance and compassion and shows how people have to adapt to different personalities and situations. Percy finds a way for everyone to fit in so they can all get through the snowy night comfortably. It also demonstrates that not everything that appears frightening in the middle of the night is as it first seems. A funny bedtime story for very young children and a book they can read themselves when they are a little older. An essential part of childhood.
