10/3/2016 The Teacher by Katerina Diamond
Well, a novel called The Teacher, complete with a shiny red apple on the cover. Irresistible.
The story opens with the headteacher and pretty quickly he is found hanged in the hall. Lots more gruesome deaths and torture follow and all victims are related to the school. A couple of detectives are called in to try to solve the case. A school in beautiful Exeter is the setting for this gore fest. Surely not! Each chapter is from the perspective of a different character, usually one of the many victims. The timeline isn't linear so some of the events are in the present and some in the past. There are clues as we go along so try to keep up. This is a crime novel that needs to decipher whodunnit and why. There is plenty of horror including the psychological variety, with some weird types of torture and murder. After a while some of the sensation wears off but this is still quite a pacy read, if a tad too long. Not terribly original - it reminds me of those horror films I watched as a teenager, but an engrossing read nonetheless.
